London is an incredible city for an outdoor family photoshoot. Within a relatively short walk, we can combine famous London landmarks, historic architecture, green spaces and beautiful views along the River Thames.
For this London family photoshoot with three children, we followed one of my favourite photography itineraries through Westminster. Starting at Westminster Underground Station, we continued towards Westminster Bridge and Big Ben before finishing with beautiful riverside and garden views of the Houses of Parliament.
With children, I prefer to make the experience feel like a family walk through London rather than a formal photography session. We keep moving, explore the city and create photographs naturally along the way.
Our photoshoot started at Westminster Station, where the classic London Underground sign immediately gave our first photographs a recognisable London feeling.
I love including small details like the Underground sign in a family gallery. Big Ben may be one of London's most famous landmarks, but these smaller details help tell the complete story of a family's time in the city.
From here, we started our relaxed walk through Westminster.
Our next stop was Westminster Bridge, one of my favourite areas for creating iconic London family photographs.
Instead of keeping three children standing in one position and asking everyone to pose continuously, we could photograph the family while walking and interacting together.
With children, movement makes such a difference. Holding hands, talking, laughing and exploring London together creates much more natural expressions than constantly asking everyone to look at the camera.
Of course, I still create some classic family portraits, but between them I concentrate on capturing the spontaneous moments.
From Westminster Bridge, we continued towards Big Ben, creating photographs with one of London's most recognisable landmarks in the background.
Big Ben is a fantastic location for families visiting London who want photographs that immediately capture the character of the city.
The important part is finding the right angles. Westminster is a busy area, so during a photoshoot I look for compositions where the family remains the focus while London's architecture creates the background.
We can create wider photographs showing the scale of the location as well as closer family portraits where Big Ben becomes a beautiful architectural detail.
Photographing a family with three children is always full of personality.
I don't expect children to behave like adults during a photoshoot, and I certainly don't expect them to stand still and smile at the camera for the entire session.
Instead, I work around their energy.
We walk, stop for photographs, explore and continue when the children are ready. Brothers and sisters can interact naturally, parents can cuddle their children, and everyone has time to enjoy the experience.
I gently guide the family when needed, but many of my favourite photographs happen in between those guided moments.
This creates a gallery combining beautiful family portraits with natural documentary photographs of family life.
After photographing the busier iconic locations around Westminster, I love introducing a completely different background.
Green riverside areas around Westminster provide a beautiful contrast to the architecture and busy streets.
Here we can create more relaxed family photographs surrounded by greenery while still incorporating magnificent views towards the Palace of Westminster and Houses of Parliament.
This contrast is one of the reasons I love this particular London photography route. One gallery can include the London Underground, Westminster Bridge, Big Ben, historic architecture, the River Thames and green gardens.
It gives families a varied collection of photographs without travelling between locations by car or taxi.
My approach to family photography combines documentary moments with gentle direction.
You don't need to know how to pose, and your children don't need to practise smiling before the photoshoot.
I will guide you when we need to create a classic family portrait or when I see particularly beautiful light and composition. The rest of the time, I encourage families to walk, interact and enjoy being together.
For children, this makes the photoshoot much easier. Instead of hearing "stand there" and "look at the camera" for an hour, they get to explore one of the most exciting cities in the world.
And while they are exploring, I am photographing the story.
This is one of my favourite routes for families who want recognisable London photographs:
Westminster Station → London Underground sign → Westminster Bridge → Big Ben → riverside walk → green gardens → Houses of Parliament views.
The route provides a wonderful variety of backgrounds while keeping the experience relaxed and manageable for families with children.
Most importantly, the photographs are not only about London's landmarks. Big Ben and Parliament provide an incredible setting, but the real story is the family walking through London together.
Years later, these photographs can bring back memories of what your children looked like, how they interacted with each other and what it felt like to explore London as a family.
If you are looking for a family photographer in London, an outdoor photo walk around Westminster is a wonderful way to combine professional family photography with an experience of the city itself.
Whether you live in London, are visiting from another part of the UK or are travelling here on a family holiday, we can create a photography itinerary around your family and the ages of your children.
With Westminster Bridge, Big Ben, the River Thames, green gardens and the Houses of Parliament as our backgrounds, we can create unmistakably London photographs while keeping the experience natural, relaxed and enjoyable for the whole family.
