Birthday Boy – 1st Year Celebration Photography

A first birthday is one of those family milestones that deserves to be remembered. For this little boy's first birthday, we created a relaxed documentary family photoshoot at home in London, capturing the celebration exactly as it happened.

There was no studio, complicated posing or artificial setup. Instead, the photographs tell the story of a cosy family birthday: handmade decorations created by Mum, birthday cakes, a very excited big sister, presents and quiet moments between Dad and his little boy.

These simple moments at home often become some of the most valuable family photographs because they preserve not only how your children looked, but how your family life actually felt at that particular moment.

The family decided to celebrate their son's first birthday at home, in the place where he already felt happy and comfortable.

For a one-year-old child, this can be a wonderful alternative to travelling to a photography studio. Everything is familiar: his toys, his parents, his sister and the surroundings he sees every day.

It also allowed us to photograph the birthday naturally, without rushing from one planned photograph to another.

Handmade First Birthday Decorations by Mum

One of the most special details of this birthday was the decor.

Mum created the decorations herself, making beautiful paper clouds and stars especially for her son's first birthday. The simplicity of the handmade decorations made them even more meaningful.

She also decorated the space with Polaroid photographs of her little boy, creating a small visual story of his first year.

These personal details are exactly why photographing a birthday at home can be so special. Years later, the photographs will bring back memories not only of the child, but of all the love and preparation that went into creating his very first birthday celebration.

Of course, a first birthday needed a cake!

A beautiful cake in blue tones was prepared for the adults, while the birthday boy had his own special little cake made from cottage cheese, suitable for him to enjoy. And then came one of the most anticipated parts of the day: the first birthday cake smash.

Rather than creating a perfectly controlled studio cake smash setup, I photographed the moment naturally. The expressions, curiosity, little hands exploring the cake and the family's reactions became part of the story.

Cake smash photography doesn't have to be perfectly posed. Sometimes the most memorable photographs are created by simply allowing a one-year-old to discover what is happening in front of him.

Big Sister Was Ready for the Birthday Party

The three-year-old big sister may have been even more excited about the birthday than her little brother!

She prepared for the celebration like a little lady, including having her manicure done especially for the occasion.

And when it was finally time to blow out the birthday candle, her excitement made the moment even more fun to photograph.

These little side stories are an important part of documentary family photography. Although it was her brother's first birthday, his sister's expressions and reactions became part of the family's memory of the day too.

After the cake had been thoroughly explored and smashed, it was time to open the birthday presents.

Again, nothing needed to be posed. I simply photographed the family as they enjoyed the celebration together.

One of my favourite parts of the story was the quiet time afterwards, when Dad and his little boy played together.

These moments may seem completely ordinary when they happen. But children change incredibly quickly, and photographs of a father sitting on the floor and playing with his one-year-old son can become more valuable with every passing year.

I didn't want to turn a real family celebration into a studio production. Instead, my aim was to preserve the little details, interactions and emotions that made this birthday unique to this family.
