I normally start by photographing important details such as the wedding dress, shoes, jewellery, perfume, flowers, invitations and rings.
Once everyone is getting ready, I concentrate more on natural interactions: bridesmaids helping with final details, conversations with family members, champagne, laughter and the moment parents see the bride completely ready.

These photographs create a natural introduction to the wedding gallery before the ceremony begins.

One of the advantages of planning a wedding at The Orangery Maidstone is having several very different ceremony settings available at the same venue.
Couples can choose between three ceremony spaces: The Garden Room, The Gazebo and The Lapa, each accommodating up to 150 guests.

This gives couples flexibility depending on the season, weather and atmosphere they want for their wedding.

During the ceremony, I photograph discreetly and allow the moments to happen naturally. Of course, I capture the entrance, vows, rings, first kiss and signing of the register, but I also constantly look for reactions around the couple.

Keeping this organised allows us to complete the formal photographs efficiently so you can return to enjoying your drinks reception.

The venue is surrounded by approximately nine acres of private landscaped grounds beside the River Len, including lawns, mature trees, water features, a lake and waterfall.

This means we can create a varied collection of couple portraits without needing to drive somewhere else or spend a large part of the wedding day away from your guests.

I don't believe couples need an hour-long formal photo shoot.

Instead, I prefer shorter sessions throughout the day. Around 10–20 minutes after the ceremony can be enough for a beautiful collection of portraits, and we can always step outside again later when the light has changed.

Because there are so many options close together, we don't need to spend valuable wedding time walking long distances between photographic locations.

This is particularly useful on a busy wedding day when you want beautiful portraits but also want to spend as much time as possible with your family and friends.

After the ceremony and drinks reception, celebrations continue inside The Orangery itself.

The reception space overlooks the gardens and is filled with natural light. The venue currently accommodates up to 150 guests for the wedding breakfast and up to 250 for the evening celebration.

Before guests enter, I like to photograph the room and all the details you have spent months planning.
Flowers, table decorations, stationery, candles, wedding favours, cake and personalised details all become part of your final wedding story.

Once everyone is seated, my photography becomes much more documentary.

During the reception, I don't want guests to feel that they constantly need to pose for photographs.
Instead, I observe.

Conversations, laughter, hugs, children playing and spontaneous interactions between family members and friends create the real atmosphere of the celebration.
These photographs are especially valuable because there will be so much happening around you that you simply cannot see everything yourself.

When you receive your final gallery, you can discover all those little moments that happened while you were enjoying another part of the wedding.

Wedding speeches are one of my favourite parts of a reception to photograph.

I don't concentrate only on the person speaking. I am constantly watching the couple, parents and guests for reactions.
A bride laughing at a story, the groom becoming emotional, parents holding hands or friends reacting to the best man's speech can produce some of the strongest documentary photographs of the entire wedding.

These moments cannot be recreated, which is why experience and anticipation are so important.

If the weather and wedding schedule allow, I love taking the couple outside for another short photo shoot later in the day.

The light in the gardens can look completely different in the evening compared with immediately after the ceremony.
The lake and surrounding landscape also give us opportunities to work with reflections and softer evening light.
This doesn't need to interrupt your reception.

Five or ten minutes outside can be enough to create another small collection of romantic photographs before returning to your guests.

As daylight disappears and the party begins, the photography naturally becomes more energetic.

The Orangery transforms from the wedding breakfast setting into the evening party space, with the bar located in the same room. The venue also offers the possibility of fireworks over the lake, creating another spectacular element for an evening celebration.

During the first dance and party, I often combine ambient light with creative flash photography.
Movement, expressions, dancing and interaction between guests create a completely different visual atmosphere from the elegant natural-light photographs taken earlier in the day.

Together, these photographs complete the story from the quiet preparations of the morning to the energy of the evening celebration.

The location also has an interesting history.

The Orangery stands within Turkey Mill, a site that began as a cloth mill in the 1600s and later became an important paper mill during the 18th century. According to the venue, paper produced there was used by historical figures including Queen Victoria, George Washington and Napoleon. The first recorded wedding at Turkey Mill took place in 1920, while The Orangery officially became a wedding venue in the 1990s.

This history gives the venue another dimension beyond its modern wedding spaces and landscaped gardens.
