Viking Bay Beach First Birthday Photoshoot in Kent

A baby's first birthday is such a special milestone, and there are so many beautiful ways to preserve it. Instead of a traditional studio session, we chose the seaside for this first birthday photoshoot at Viking Bay Beach in Broadstairs, Kent.

The beach gave us everything we needed for a natural and relaxed photoshoot: beautiful open space, sand, the sea and plenty of freedom for a little one to explore.

Rather than creating a complicated studio setup, the idea was to keep the session simple and concentrate on the baby, his first birthday and all the spontaneous little moments that happened along the way.

Viking Bay is one of my favourite locations for an outdoor family photoshoot near London in Kent.

Located in the heart of Broadstairs, the sandy beach and seaside surroundings create a wonderful backdrop for baby and family photography. The location gives us plenty of opportunities to create both close portraits and wider photographs incorporating the beautiful Kent coastline.

For a one-year-old, an outdoor photoshoot can also feel much more like an adventure than a formal photography session.

We can sit on the sand, explore, play and allow the child to become comfortable with the surroundings and the camera.

One year old child birthday photography doesn't have to take place inside a photography studio. Taking the celebration outdoors creates a completely different atmosphere. At Viking Bay, the beach became our natural studio.

The little birthday boy was free to discover the sand and water in his own way. Little hands, curious expressions, messy fingers and sand everywhere are exactly the moments that make a first birthday so much fun to photograph.

I don't need a one-year-old to look into my camera for every photograph. At this age, their natural reactions are far more interesting.

The first birthday represents an incredible year of changes.

In just twelve months, a tiny newborn has developed their own expressions, personality, curiosity and ways of communicating with Mum and Dad.

This is why first birthday photography is about much more than getting a photograph with a cake.

I want to preserve the details parents will want to remember: tiny hands and feet, serious expressions followed seconds later by laughter, curiosity about the sand, interaction with Mum and Dad and the excitement of discovering something completely new.

These photographs become a little record of exactly who your child was at one year old.

My approach to photographing babies and young children is relaxed and natural.

We don't need to spend the entire session trying to make a one-year-old sit perfectly still or smile directly at the camera. Instead, I allow plenty of time for exploring, playing and interacting with parents.

I gently guide the family when needed, especially when I find beautiful light or a particularly good background, but many photographs happen completely spontaneously.

This combination of documentary photography and gentle guidance creates photographs that are beautiful while still feeling genuine.

A first birthday session is also a wonderful opportunity to create some updated family photographs.

Before or after the cake smash, we can photograph Mum and Dad walking with their baby, playing together on the beach, cuddling or simply enjoying time by the sea.

Viking Bay gives us space to move around rather than staying in one fixed photography setup. This is particularly helpful when working with babies and toddlers because their attention naturally moves from one thing to another.
