Family photographs are an important part of a wedding gallery. Although my main approach is documentary, I always recommend allocating some time for organised group photographs.

Before the wedding, I normally suggest preparing a short list of the most important family combinations. This helps us photograph everyone efficiently so guests can return to enjoying the reception.

After completing the essential family groups, there is usually an opportunity to create a few more relaxed photographs with friends, bridesmaids, groomsmen and other guests.

During the speeches, I don't concentrate only on the person speaking. Reactions are equally important. A parent's expression, the couple laughing together or a guest wiping away a tear can become one of the strongest photographs in the final gallery.

Using different lenses allows me to photograph these reactions discreetly from a distance without interrupting the atmosphere of the reception.

Evening Wedding Photography at The Moat

As daylight changes, the photographs naturally develop a different atmosphere.

If the weather and wedding schedule allow, I love taking the couple outside for another short portrait session later in the day. Evening light can provide a completely different look from photographs created immediately after the ceremony.

It is also a lovely opportunity for the newlyweds to have a few quiet minutes together before returning to their guests.

Afterwards, photography continues with the cake cutting, first dance and party. At this point I often introduce flash photography to capture the energy and movement of the dance floor while preserving the atmosphere of the celebration.
